This is a Ca. 1960 Oil on Masonite by W. Cortland Butterfield (1904-1977) The colors, subject matter, modernist style and size all scream Mid Century Modern. It measures 51 1/2" x 21 1/2", framed in its original period frame. It is in very good condition, with NO visible issues.
Butterfield was born in NJ and studied art at Cooper Union in NYC, the Art Students League and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He exhibited throughout the Northeastern U.S., Taught at the Art Students League, Newark Academy of Arts and Montclair School of Fine Art. In his later years he lived in and painted in New Hope, PA, where he was a popular portrait artist.
