Compassionate, dedicated people are needed to join our Hospice team by becoming volunteers who provide support and companionship to patients and their family members who are facing the most difficult period of time in their lives. Our patient volunteers visit hospice patients in their homes or offer supportive phone calls to those grieving the loss of a loved one who died while on our hospice service. Devoting 2 to 4 hours of your time weekly can make a world of difference to a terminally ill patient or his family. We are the only non-profit Hospice program in the city of Philadelphia, and we are part of the VNA of Greater Phiadelphia which has served patients since 1886. Volunteers with the VNA's Hospice of Philadelphia are "special people doing special things". We would love for you to become one of our special people.

VITA tax preparers for tax season 2010 (Cramer Hill, Camden NJ)

Description
Looking for volunteers to help low-income individuals and families Camden file their taxes during the 2010 tax season. The Cramer Hill Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Center will run from January till April (2010), Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturdays during the day. This is great learning opportunity, and also a good resume booster. This is not only relevant for those with tax and number crunching experience, we are looking for people with a sincere interest in giving back to a community in need. Anyone can learn! We offer comprehensive training and support via training materials provided by the IRS. Practice exercises are available online, and a certification process insures that volunteers are ready to fulfill their role as tax preparers before the center opens. Training materials will be available in November of 2009. This center is a project the Cramer Hill Community Development Corporation, and operates in a pleasant community space in the neighborhood in which we serve. Taxes are prepared using TaxWise software, so much of the tax preparation process is automated (no pencils and erasers required). We look forward to working with both seasoned and new volunteers, so come join us! Drop us a line for more information.

Skills
Previous tax and/or accounting experience is useful, but not required. Spanish speaking skills highly desired, but not required.
The Convent is situated in the region of Abruzzo, centre of Italy, about 150 km away from Rome. It has been fully restored by the local institution Mountain Community and furnished following as much as possible the "static free" standards.
The project aims to bring new economic, tourist and especially cultural and spiritual movements in a quite isolated area. It deals with sustainable living, no waste, recycling and clever use of energies.
As every year international volunteer groups will spend some days at the ex Convento San Giorgio: a good chance to meet people from all over the world, to know a bit of Italian culture, getting in touch with permaculture and sustainable living; all this while staying in a Convent of the XVII century and discovering the beautiful Park of Sirente–Velino.
This is a special project in which international volunteers will help to collect olives in the field. The field is about 45 minutes away from the Convent (by car). During this period volunteers will be spending the day in the field. Work can be hard for some who are not used to it.

Lunar New Year festival for orphans in Saigon
February 1 - February 11, 2010

TET Festival is Vietnamese traditional New Year Holiday (following Lunar Calendar) which usually falls into mid January – mid February. This is the time for family reunion and visits to friends and relatives. Like the Christmas and New Year in western countries, people here prepare a lot for this holiday, from renovating their houses, making cakes and a lot of food and drinks. However, in the orphanages, children do not have enough to prepare for their holiday. Most of them stay in the orphanage or centers over the Tet, only some of them go back to their home villages. Thus, there is need to prepare something for those children, so they still have good time and enjoy such big holidays.
In Ho Chi Minh City area, an international workcamp will be set up to prepare Tet holidays in Ky Quang Orphanage and Chua La Orphanage.
Volunteers will help renovating the houses, cleaning the site and making Chung Cake (traditional cake for children in Tet).

This year the hurricane Jimena has lashed the city of Guaymas leaving an important level of rain. 2009 is the year when it rained the most (in the last 50 years) and this caused an important damage to the population of Guaymas and to the city. The hurricane affected people of all backgrounds, leaving a lot of people in the middle of nowhere since they lost everything they had. Everything was affected, public buildings, leisure areas, houses, schools, there was no place that was not affected.
This international volunteer project is organized in order to help in the reconstruction of the city of Guaymas with the support of motivated volunteers. There are many things to be done since there were several areas seriously affected. We need help to clean beaches, to rebuild sportive spaces, to clean up parks and community spaces, to fix roads, to help in rural communities by giving health workshops.
After the hurricane, the children affected don’t have a place to continue their studies, they lost everything they had for their education: material, furniture, the roof collapsed and the walls were damaged because of the water and humidity. For that reason, at this first stage, the goal of the project is renovating and reconstructing two schools damaged by the Jimena Hurricane, so the children affected can return to their educative activities as soon as possible and in a clean and healthy environment, appropriate for their development and with the support of the international volunteers. This project will benefit 25 families for the first school and 180 families for the second school.
Volunteers will help with the reconstruction of the two schools affected. They will help with reconstruction activities such as painting walls, reforestation, and cleaning the schools. They will contribute to renovate these structures through scratching and painting walls, and will also do some artistic work such as painting murals on the walls of the schools with the help of local volunteers with landscapes and thematic appropriate for the children. The volunteers will also help planting trees and reforesting the affected area, making and putting signals and signs.
Age range: 18 and over
Location: Morelia is a beautiful historic city, and capital of the state of Michoacán. Founded almost 500 years ago, the city has a wonderful central zone with buildings dating back to the time of the Spanish conquest as well as all the more modern attributes (shops, bars, cafés, etc). The city's population is over 1 million and the climate is moderately warm, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-35º C. Morelia is well connected to a variety of great places to visit, such as Pátzcuaro, and the ancient Purépecha capital Tzintzunzan.

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

For volunteer opportunities in other countries click here: www.cadip.org

Do you have an infant who turned 3 months old within the last month or who will turn 3 months old in November or early December 2009?

Researchers in the Psychology Department of Temple University are looking for healthy, normally developing, infants to participate in a study which examines how infants perceive the movements and actions they make. During the visit to the laboratory, your infant would watch segments of their own actions while we observe their behavior. Dr. Peter Marshall and his lab team are carrying out this research study, which is funded by the National Science Foundation.

If you are interested in having your infant participate, please call Christina at 215-204-2436. The session will last approximately 1 hour. In return for participation, you will receive $35 and an age-appropriate toy for your infant. We offer free parking if you want to drive; however, if you decide to take public transportation instead, we are very close to the Broad Street Line, a few bus lines, and the Regional Rail.

The Campaign for Working Families seeks practical ways to improve the economic status of working people in Philadelphia so that working families have the opportunity to increase their income, wisely manage their finances, protect themselves from predatory financial services, build assets and access higher education. We work to increase the education and economic viability of Philadelphia’s low income working households so that they can plan for stable, secure futures and can participate fully in civic, community and academic life.

At tax time (January- April) we provide a free tax preparation service at more than 10 sites around the city for low income working families. The program serves over 10,000 residents every year. In six years of operation we have saved low wage Philadelphia tax payers roughly $19 million in fees and other charges. In addition, we link customers with fairly priced banking products, access to public benefits (such as FAFSA) and other services to increase financial stability.

Position Title: Resource Builder

Position Overview: Resource builders are cross trained in tax preparation and public benefits application (FAFSA, food stamps, SCHIP, etc.), and utilize one software program that combines all applications in one seamless process to provide customers with a one stop shop to build resources for financial stability at our tax sites.
Training will be held on January 9th, 16th, 18th and 23rd. Tax sites are conveniently located throughout the city of Philadelphia. We need at least 50 resource builder volunteers to give 3-4 hours a week, especially during late January and February, our busiest time.

Qualifications:
•	NO tax law experience necessary – all training provided.
•	Ability to volunteer at least four hours per week for six weeks during tax season (January-March).
•	Computer proficiency (comfortable to fill out online application forms).
•	Ability to attend training.
•	Ability to work independently.
•	Strong counseling and communication skills.
o	Spanish language proficiency is a valuable bonus skill, though not required.
•	Commitment to the mission of the Campaign for Working Families.

To apply, visit our website at www.phillyfreetaxes.org and click “get involved”,
or contact Elly Porter-Webb at epwebb@gpuac.org, (215) 851-1759.

Infant language research study at the University of Pennsylvania
Funded by the National Institutes of Health
Approved by the Institutional Review Board at the University of Pennsylvania

What is the goal?
We are looking for infants and toddlers (30 months and under) to participate in an observational research study about early language development. This work helps us to understand how children learn language, focusing on what children know, even if they don’t say it yet.

Who can participate?
English-learning infants and toddlers between the ages of 7 and 30 months (with the parent or guardian).

What you will be asked to do?
Visit us at the Infant Language Center in the Department of Psychology for about a half hour. During the visit, your child will sit on your lap and watch a 4-minute movie and hear speech while we carefully observe how your child responds.

Compensation:
Your choice of $20, or two children's books (or a combination of $10 and 1 book). Parking or Septa (public transportation) will be reimbursed.

Why it's important?
What we learn from testing infants and children may ultimately lead to better
and more reliable early interventions for children with language difficulties.

Interested?

November 14 - November 28, 2009

Surrounded by a rice field, Teluk Wetan village is home to 9,573 people, who mostly sustain themselves through farming, trading, and making furniture and handicrafts from rattan (a tough palm tree). Tradition permeates this Indonesian society, which closely sticks to a defined culture and maintains time-honoured practices. SDN Kampus Teluk Wetan, a school located in Teluk Wetan village, was founded to provide the local villagers with an educational facility that offers them better, lasting education. Currently, there are 655 students in SDN Kampus Teluk Wetan. School hours are between 7am to 12 am from Monday to Saturday. Aside from regular classes, the students also take part in after-hour activities such as Boyscouts on Friday afternoon, football and volleyball on Saturday afternoon, and art on Sunday morning.
Through this project, volunteers will make bookshelves for a new library, which is just being made to fulfill the reading needs of the students. The volunteers will also actively engage in educational and after-hour activities with the children. Volunteers will teach 3rd, 4th, 5th grade students simple English and introduce some English kids songs. They will equally be involved in valuable culture exchange and in playing with the kids.
Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced to the Indonesian culture and customs in general, with a special focus on the Javanese particularities. Some cultural visits are also foreseen.
Leisure time: During the free time, the volunteers may visit Jepara city which is well known for its wooden craft products. They will also be visiting Bandengan beach.

Thus, by collecting eggs from the females and by taking care of them during the whole process of incubation up to the birth of the baby turtles, volunteers and local people contribute to the preservation of these species.
Through different activities throughout the year the “Sirenito Macho” project helps to prevent the turtle eggs being stolen, ensuring the turtles’ reproduction in permanence in the zone. Through these activities the organization looks also for increasing the conscience within the local population and local and federal authorities about the importance of preserving these species as well as about ecological matters. It promotes as well a deep cultural exchange between the local people and international volunteers.
The volunteers will carry out different tasks to help preserve two different kinds of marine turtle (Lepidochelys Olivacea and Dermochelys Coracea) by collecting the eggs that the females lay down in the zone and putting them into a yard at the “Sirenito Macho” camping. They will take care of them up to the baby turtles’ birth and help to lead them to the ocean and release them. They will also help to collect statistical data and will patrol the zone where the turtles nest by night. They will have, finally, the opportunity to help cleaning the beach.

The official language of the workcamp is English.

Description:

TutorChatLive.org is currently recruiting volunteers to tutor online starting when we relaunch the site on January 18, 2010.

The main responsibility is tutoring students who request our free, live help. Our service is open and available to anyone that can access the website. Tutors work from the comfort of their own homes/offices on their computer and chat one-on-one with students in an instant messaging-type program. Tutors have many tools at their disposal such as the ability to link the student with online resources, draw on a virtual whiteboard, and transfer the chat to other available tutors online should they need further assistance.

Tutors can tutor in any subject area for which they have knowledge of, at least at the middle school/high school level. Math/science is of high demand, but not required.

We are very flexible with scheduling but request at minimum that tutors be online for two hours a week and commit to six months of tutoring with our service.

If you are a high school student in need of community service hours, we will gladly provide those.

Application:

Please apply online at our (soon to be redesigned) website at http://www.tutorchatlive.org.

Once we receive and review your application, you will be contacted to set up a phone meeting where we will discuss more about our program and give you the opportunity to ask questions.

Next, telephone orientations will take place late November/early December at which point we will teach tutors the ins and outs of the site and chat program for preparation for our launch on January 18, 2010.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at admin@tutorchatlive.org

We hope to hear from you soon!

Literacy Freeze, Be part of a massive flash mob ! (Center City, Philadelphia)

Dear Volunteers,

On behalf of the Center for Literacy (CFL), the nation’s largest community-based nonprofit literacy provider, we invite you to participate in and support a unique, innovative, and unprecedented public awareness campaign: the 2009 Literacy Freeze.

The Literacy Freeze will occur in a highly public place in Center City Philadelphia on Friday, November 20, 2009 and will convene hundreds of individuals like you to freeze motionless for a few minutes while appearing to read something. The specific location will be revealed upon your commitment.

The agents will be staging a mission-based publicity stunt and enhancing public awareness through the strategic distribution of educational materials. CFL will ensure the Freeze is covered by television, radio, and print media, and will promote and spread the event through Internet-based social-networking media such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Digg, Reddit, and others, potentially reaching millions of viewers.

Why the Literacy Freeze?

Because nearly 30% of Philadelphia adults, about 400,000 individuals, don’t have a high school diploma. (Brookings Institute)

Because nearly 22% of Philadelphia adults, 250,000 individuals, read below the basic level, unable to recognize simple words. (National Center for Education Statistics)

Because “[m]ore than half of Philadelphia's working-age adults, about 550,000 people, cannot handle the basic arithmetic and reading necessary to succeed in the majority of jobs in the city.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)

Here’s what you can do:

•	Learn more about Center for Literacy at www.centerforliteracy.org
•	Register for the event at www.centerforliteracy.org/litfreeze
•	Follow us on Twitter and Facebook
•	Tell your friends!

We look forward to working with you to promote the cause of literacy. Feel free to contact us with questions at litfreeze@centerforliteracy.org.

Male volunteers needed to assist people living with HIV/AIDS

Male volunteers are needed to assist people with HIV/AIDS ... Due to an overwhelming response of women to our call for volunteers, we enjoy an overabundance of female volunteers in our program. Our current need, however, is for male volunteers to serve as ActionAIDS Buddy Volunteers.

Buddy Volunteers provide HIV+ people with limited practical and emotional support - along with care, compassion, and a listening ear. A smile, a kind word, and a positive attitude can be invaluable to someone living with this disease. Buddies provide these and other supports. As well, Buddies receive training prior to their volunteer work and on-going support during their volunteer experience. Buddies visit their client 1-2 times per month and call their client once or twice a week. They also attend a monthly meeting along with other Buddy Volunteers for support and supervision. A one year commitment is requested for this volunteer position.

ActionAIDS is the largest AIDS-service agency in the state of Pennsylvania. We possess the ONLY Buddy Program of this type in Philadelphia assisting people living with HIV. We have about 200 buddies in our program - all of whom are diverse in in terms of age, race, ethnicity, spiritual and/or political ideology, sexual orientation, HIV status, gender, and socioeconomic level ... Come join us in a uniquely fulfilling experience... and meet terrific people - clients, staff, and other volunteers - in the process!

The first step is attending a New Volunteer Orientation. We hold these orientations monthly in the evening at our center city office. Our next one will take place on Thursday, December 3rd, 2009. (If you can't make that one, the following orientation will be held in early January 2010.) Contact Tony Morelli, ActionAIDS Volunteer Specialist, at 215-981-3324, or via email at Anthony.Morelli@actionaids.org for information, questions, and/or to pre-register. Family and/or friends who are also interested may attend as well! Attendance at an orientation in no way obligates an individual to volunteer. There are several subsequent steps following orientation, including a 4-evening training for new Buddy Volunteers. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and out of high school and with no history of criminal activity and/or child abuse. (ActionAIDS runs - and pays for - these checks on all potential volunteers.) Thank you!

He has been reading to kids in his buddy program at school and loves doing it. Our first idea was to go to local hospitals and read to sick children. None of our local hospitals allow children to volunteer under the age of 14. Please email me back if this sounds like a fun idea for your youngster.

December 16, 2009 - January 1, 2010
January 6 - January 22, 2010
January 27 - February 12, 2010

The program for protecting the Marine Turtles is run since 1996 together with the Michoacan University and the local people of Colola Beach. This year again the international volunteers will work with the people of Colola village to protect the sea turtles. There are two kinds of turtles that arrive on the beach, the Negra (Black Turtle) and the Golfina (Olive Riddle Turtle). The people involved in the project help by collecting eggs, burying them in the turtle camp, taking care of the baby turtles and doing some work collecting statistical information.
In this frame, a group of international volunteers will be involved in the project as members of the staff, which means that the volunteers will be very involved in the project and the work.
The goal of this project is to protect the turtles and to help run the conservation activities of the turtle protection program, promoting international cooperation and solidarity.
The main work consists in collecting turtle eggs, burying them again in a secure place, and transporting the baby turtles safely to the sea. This will be carried out at night since the turtles do not get out of the ocean during the day (because of their natural predators, it is safer for the turtles go out of the ocean in the dark). Together with the people from Colola Village, the volunteers will seek for the turtles and take care of the eggs and the baby turtles. Local people, who are very friendly, work with the group and explain them what to do.
Very motivated volunteers who really want to get involved in the work for protection of the turtles are needed for this project.
There are also some extra activities to be done with the local people in order to help improve the town such as setting names to the streets of the town or helping to arrange a multi-use playground for the children, and maybe some cleaning work, but this depends on the volunteers' initiative. The people of the town are very open to participate in other activities that the group of volunteers can propose, so any ideas will be welcome.
Language: The official language of the project is English. Some Spanish would be appreciated.
Location: Colola is a small town located on the Michoacan State coast, between Maruata and La Placita towns. It's a remote place that offers an excellent opportunity to be close to nature, on a virgin beach, with no tourism around. The closest city is Tecoman at 200 kilometers, but other villages such as La Placita that are closer (45 minutes by bus) can offer Internet connection.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

This project is part of CADIP's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm

Since 2003, the Cardinal Bevilacqua Community Center (CBCC) has provided social, cultural, educational, and enrichment services and programs to the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. In addition to many after-school educational and recreational programs for local grade school students, the CBCC offers Adult Education courses that are geared towards providing underemployed and unemployed members of the community with the education and job skills that are required for them to attain meaningful and gainful employment, as well as providing the community with knowledge of emerging technologies and trainings so that their skills remain contemporarily marketable. The CBCC offers Financial Literacy, GED preparation, ESL, Homeownership, Job Training, and various levels of Computer and Technology courses.

We are currently searching for at least two dynamic and experienced volunteer instructors to teach our ESL and Basic Computer Skills/Microsoft Office courses. Both courses will begin in early January and last until the end of March.
The Volunteer Computer & Technology Instructor will be responsible for teaching a class on Microsoft Office applications (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and basic Data Entry for roughly 5-10 students. You will be provided with a general curriculum and outline, but will have the autonomy to alter the trajectory of the course according to the students’ level of experience and needs. The course will meet for 1.5 hours twice each week, from 6-7:30 PM on Tuesday and Thursday.
It is one of the most tourist places in the region and has a lot to offer to the visitor. Its laidback atmosphere and amazing beaches give it a very distinctive touch. It is also a prime location for learning yoga and meditation in one of its many ashrams. It is also the home of Auroville, a famous international community created by the Guru Sri Auro Bindo.
The volunteer project is organized in cooperation with an active local NGO in the field of education and renovation. In the past years many schools and villages have benefited from the work done by international volunteers, including the 2004 Tsunami-hit regions. A shelter for children and old aged people was opened in a village 10 km from the city, providing support to the poorer sections of the population in the district. The volunteers will be involved in various activities ranging from manual work at the center, creative and entertainment activities in schools and kindergartens and spreading awareness on issues related to education, environment protection, health and hygiene. The idea is to tackle the burning issues that the rural population is facing.

For more details, please visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-india.htm

Volunteer opportunities in other countries: www.cadip.org/workcamps.htm, t: 617-502-0400 (US), 604-628-7400 (Canada)
