On behalf of the Center for Literacy (CFL), the nation’s largest community-based nonprofit literacy provider, we invite you to participate in and support a unique, innovative, and unprecedented public awareness campaign: the 2009 Literacy Freeze.
The Literacy Freeze will occur in a highly public place in Center City Philadelphia on Friday, November 20, 2009 and will convene hundreds of individuals like you to freeze motionless for a few minutes while appearing to read something. The specific location will be revealed upon your commitment.
The agents will be staging a mission-based publicity stunt and enhancing public awareness through the strategic distribution of educational materials. CFL will ensure the Freeze is covered by television, radio, and print media, and will promote and spread the event through Internet-based social-networking media such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Digg, Reddit, and others, potentially reaching millions of viewers.
Why the Literacy Freeze?
Because nearly 30% of Philadelphia adults, about 400,000 individuals, don’t have a high school diploma. (Brookings Institute)
Because nearly 22% of Philadelphia adults, 250,000 individuals, read below the basic level, unable to recognize simple words. (National Center for Education Statistics)
Because “[m]ore than half of Philadelphia's working-age adults, about 550,000 people, cannot handle the basic arithmetic and reading necessary to succeed in the majority of jobs in the city.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)
