Since 2003, the Cardinal Bevilacqua Community Center (CBCC) has provided social, cultural, educational, and enrichment services and programs to the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. In addition to many after-school educational and recreational programs for local grade school students, the CBCC offers Adult Education courses that are geared towards providing underemployed and unemployed members of the community with the education and job skills that are required for them to attain meaningful and gainful employment, as well as providing the community with knowledge of emerging technologies and trainings so that their skills remain contemporarily marketable. The CBCC offers Financial Literacy, GED preparation, ESL, Homeownership, Job Training, and various levels of Computer and Technology courses.

We are currently searching for at least two dynamic and experienced volunteer instructors to teach our ESL and Basic Computer Skills/Microsoft Office courses. Both courses will begin in early January and last until the end of March.

The Volunteer Computer & Technology Instructor will be responsible for teaching a class on Microsoft Office applications (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and basic Data Entry for roughly 5-10 students. You will be provided with a general curriculum and outline, but will have the autonomy to alter the trajectory of the course according to the students’ level of experience and needs. The course will meet for 1.5 hours twice each week, from 6-7:30 PM on Tuesday and Thursday.

The Volunteer ESL Instructor will be responsible for facilitating group and individual exercises, as well as creative projects that focus on the students’ hands-on comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills in the English language. We request that volunteers have some experience or certification teaching ESL courses, and also that their primary or secondary language is Spanish. The ESL course will meet for 1.5 hours twice each week, from 6-7:30 PM on Monday and Wednesday.

Qualified candidates, including current undergraduate and graduate students, are encouraged to apply. Serious volunteers only, namely those who are responsible and willing to make the three month commitment.

In addition to gaining valuable teaching experience and building their resumes, volunteer instructors will be contributing to the socio-economic improvement of the lives of the Kensington community, as well as providing empowerment and knowledge to those who are in need.

Please send a cover letter and resume to the email address listed above.
