WPF guru (Warrington, PA)

Senior .net WPF programmer for very well funded, very exciting startup.

Our startup company has just received multi-million dollar funding, and it is time for us to take over development and overall ownership of our product, from some consultants who have built the product so far. We want to own our own destiny, and also the consultants are too expensive. The good news is that the consultants are ex-Microsoft architects, and quite talented, so the code we take over won't make us too miserable.

The software is the company's product -- you will be in the center of things, not overhead. It is written on the current Microsoft stack top-to-bottom (.net, c#, sql server, WPF etc.). It is consumer-oriented software, with an installed client communicating to key services on the web (some that we will run ourselves on web servers, some cloud services like Amazon S3). It is heavily multi-media, and it is frankly some really great-looking stuff. It provides a service that is instantly appealing to all who hear about it (this claim is not just anecdotal, but validated by professionally conducted focus groups).

The consultants have managed to scare the board members into thinking that WPF expertise is somehow so rare and special that they can never be replaced. We need a WPF superhero to come on board and set their fears to rest, and drive our nearly-done-but-not-quite product to launch in the marketplace early next year.

You should be smart, sane, easy enough to get along with (small companies need great trust and friendship), have perfect integrity, and a portfolio of ravishingly wonderful stuff you have built in c# using WPF. You should want to architect and code. We already have really talented creative types to drive requirements. Sorry, we don't need managers at our tiny startup size, we need people who write awesome software. You do need to have years of experience doing this professionally. There will come a time when we can hire people just entering the workforce, but that time is not now -- we need you to hit the ground running.

We will offer you:
* work just as interesting as it gets,
* fair but not excessive cash compensation (we are a startup after all),
* ground-floor equity participation (with real potential we believe),
* benefits as good as we can afford (which we expect to be pretty good),
* a strong team of people who know what they are doing, for you to work with,
* a crappy, cheap office (but a good chair, good software and a good computer),
* long hours, camaraderie and tons of direct control over the destiny and shape of the product and thus the company.

Please be out there, be interested, and contact us fast. We need you, and we offer what is truly an extraordinary, rare, wonderful opportunity.

Of course we don't discriminate against anyone for any reason, and we never will. If you are smart, skilled and nice we don't care about where you are from, what you believe, how you look, how you talk or who you love. You do have to be eligible to work in the US.

We are Pobox.com. (We are also Listbox.com). We've been around since before the Internet was cool, offering all kinds of email-related services.

We're a small company located in center city Philadelphia. It would be awesome if you're in our neighborhood, but we'll consider telecommuting for the right person. It's a pretty comfortable and casual office, so don't panic.

We like open source; it runs our business. As much as possible, we try to write our code so that we can release it -- it's easier to write good code when you know other people will see it.

Feel free to sign up for a trial account of either service to see more about what we do.
http://www.listbox.com -- email marketing and listservs

...or ask about us on IRC. You're on IRC, right?

=head1 WHO YOU ARE

You are a programmer who loves Perl. You might like horrible one-offs that make your Python-loving friends wince once in a while, but mostly you like writing well-designed, easy to maintain modern Perl programs. You like objects, and you build them with Moose. You build your web services with Catalyst and PSGI. You publish code to the CPAN and other people use it.

Ideally, you're familiar with DBIx::Class, jQuery, Mason, and maybe Python and PHP. Ruby would be great, too.

=head1 WHAT'S THE JOB?

Some of it is maintenance: we have a big code base written across many years. We want it to be smaller, modern modern, and more cohesive. Every time you delete more code than you commit, an angel gets his wings.

Some of it is new development: we have lots of ideas about where we want to go next, and that means writing more, modern, maintainable systems. Lots of this
would be web and web services, lots would be email handling code, and there are plenty of other problem domains, too.

Here's an unordered list of things you'd be working with:

* Moose         * Postfix       * RoundCube
* Catalyst      * MySQL         * Git
* jQuery        * SQLite        * Lighttpd
* Mason         * Zope          * Email::MIME::Kit
* Python        * FreeSide      * Rx Schema
// WHO YOU ARE

You are a programmer who loves the web. You like making cool web interfaces. Not just cool, though; they're easy to use and are built around the needs and assumptions of the user. Every time you learn more about the users, you think about how you can turn that into an interface improvement.

You have an opinion about which one of the popular JavaScript libraries you like best. Somewhere, deep inside, a little part of you likes fixing bugs in your page that only show up on Internet Explorer. You unit test your JavaScript code whenever you can.

You don't just write front-end code, though. You know how to write the server side code to manage your sessions, talk to the database, and do all the stuff that makes the front-end worth using. Maybe you use Rails or Django. Even better, you've used Catalyst and love working with it.

// WHAT'S THE JOB?

We've been around for a long time. Here and there, we've let our web interface grow a little outdated. In other places, it's nice and modern, but just needs to be kept up to date with modern libraries and kept standard across all our services. You'll be leading the charge against outdated and duplicated code. You'll implement new parts of our user interface to provide a slick user experience, and you'll bring existing pages up to date to keep things easy to rely on and maintain.

Ruby, Rails, Ajax developer needed (Wilmington, DE)

We are currently looking to fill at least 2 developer positions on a multi-project, multi-person team. We are hiring full time, long-term, but are open to shorter-term project work that can be renewed if necessary. Our immediate need is for one of our clients in the Wilmington, DE area. The positions are the same in nature and require some specific expertise in a few technical areas.

Technical requirements:
Candidates must have experience in Ruby, Rails, Ajax, Java, Javascript, and similar tools. Must know Unix and be comfortable on Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server, although intimate sysadmin knowledge is not required. Finally, familiarity with Apache and mySQL is required.

Favor will be given to candidates that have rich Internet application (RIA) background, such as Adobe Air/Flex, and familiarity with Tomcat, Perl, AppleScript (Studio and Cocoa Bridge), and FileMaker. You'll win additional points if you have knowledge of Alfresco and the ability to abstract functionality for developing methods of handling user personas in a collaborate or social networking application space.

Obviously, this is a Mac-focused organization, so you can't hate Macs or think that they can't do what most other 'nix systems are capable of. No marks against you if you prefer Windows. However, you might just find it hard to win friends in influence people on the team!

Soft requirements:
This is every bit as important as the technical requirements, maybe more so. We need people who are not afraid to take on new technologies and have a proven track record of mastering them. For example, you and and your team might decide that someone needs to put together a suite of Python scripts to work around some limitation in the CMS, but no one on the team is familiar enough with Python. Well, you might be the one elected to figure it out, master it, and implement a solution in one week. If you don't like these types of challenges or if you shy away from things you don't know, then I can promise you won't be happy on this team.

We also need people who are willing to work without written requirements. We employ many aspects of Agile Programming. Much of the development we are doing is based on someone having an idea and the team running with it until something amazing drops out. Many developers enjoy this type of work but it's not for everyone. Developers ingrained with a stodgy, corporate-style, waterfall development methodology are going to find it difficult to cope with the pace and constantly evolving set of requirements.

Types of projects you might work on:
We currently have projects underway that include digital asset management (DAM), dynamic web interfaces to an ever-changing set of databases, "shopping cart" technology for an Enterprise charge-back system, social networking apps, publishing system customization, content management system development, etc. As you can see, we have a diverse and ever-growing number of interesting projects that each comes with its own set of challenges. We promise that life won't be dull around the office!
