I found this kitten a few days ago and tried locating his owner but haven't had any luck. I am a foster parent for ACCT and currently have other fosters in our spare room and we also have resident cats so we have NO WHERE to put him. I have been keeping him in a crate for the past couple days but he deserves to be able to roam the house. We are looking for someone to foster him or adopt him. Buffy, Spike and Willow are siblings and were recently rescued from the PSPCA. Buffy is a petite little tortie girl with white paws and belly. Don't let her size fool you - she is a dynamo. Buffy and Spike are constant motion and love to play especially with each other. Spike is an orange and white tabby with long legs which probably means he will be a big boy one day! He loves nothing more than playing. But he and Buffy also like to be cuddled and have the loudest purr for such tiny kittens. Their sister Willow looks much like Buffy but has only a thin stripe of beige down the center of her forehead. She loves too play also but is a little more subdued compared to Buffy and Spike! Again don't let her more subdued nature fool you because she likes to talk - A LOT! She tells you what she wants and it's usually cuddling.

These kittens are my fosters from the PSPCA and have had their first shots and were dewormed. They are FIV and feline leukemia negative and will be getting spayed/neutered around the end of July when they have gained enough weight to undergo surgery and then they are ready for their new home. They are currently sharing a room with 2 other foster kitties and get along well. They are roughly 7 to 8 weeks old and come with 30 days of free vet care at the PSPCA clinic. They are litter box trained! Their adoption fee is $75 to cover some of their vet care and the fee goes straight to the PSCPA and if you decide you want two kitties you only pay one fee! Meet the 4th of July siblings: Ben (Franklin) and Betsy (Ross). This dynamic duo were found as strays and taken to the PSPCA where they would have been euthanized due to the significant overcrowding. However, they were freed only one day before the 4th of July and they are ready to celebrate. Ben is the grey/black tabby. He is very playful and friendly and loves to cuddle on your lap. Betsy is his tortie sister. She has some long hairs interspersed with her short hair so she may end up with medium length fur. She is extremely playful. They both purr very loudly - they are celebrating their freedom you know!

This is sometimes hard to tell. Even reputable breeders have to start somewhere, and even most good ones don't have a line a mile long to buy. Here are some good guidelines.

A reputable dog/cat breeder should:

-Have papers for their animals, preferably from the AKC, if dogs
-Probably not be advertising on craigslist
-Have a rigorous screen process before allowing you to even meet the animals available
-Be focused on only one or two breeds; more than that suggests lack of attention to the quality of animals produced. Mutts are not produced by quality breeders, ever.
-Have a website where you can read about/see their facilities/animals/history of their kennel or cattery (don't rely on this, though, without seeing it in person)
-Always be willing to let you see the animal in person, as well as it's parents, before purchasing
-Be able to provide documentation of health records/shots/etc
-Have a contract to be signed by both parties, usually requiring the animal being sold is spayed/neutered
-Not be selling the animal for ridiculously low prices or claiming they need to be "out" by a certain time

Reputable breeders breed dogs to improve the breed, with the dog's best interests in mind. Backyard breeders breed for money, or personal satisfaction and pleasure.

Here are a few ways to find a reputable breeder

1. A good breeder will strongly discourage shipping or delivering...they will strongly encourage that you come to pick up the puppy.
2. A good breeder works towards breeding better quality dogs and improving certain characteristics so good breedrs always show their "breeder quaity" dogs at dog shows.
3. A good breeder will take back his dogs at any time for any reason.
4. A good breeder will be able to tell you specific reasons he bred the parents of the puppies and what his specific goals were for doing so (ie. The bitch has a very good ear and tail set but the dog has an overall very well-build body and good stance, so my goal is to have a well-build dog with a good stance and better ear and tail set, etc)
5. A good breeder will encourage that you meet the parents of the puppies.
6. A good breeder's dogs (the parents, not the puppies) are very well behaved. They will not jump, nock you over, or disobey a command given to them by their owner. This is because good breeders always show their dogs, and show dogs are very well behaved and very well trained.

Good breeders show try to improve the breeds' characteristics, temperment, health, etc. so they show their dogs to prove it. Some breeders will breed any two pretty dogs and sell the puppies, but they're breeding to create more puppies, not to improve the breed. I strongly frown upon this because there are already so many dogs in shelters. The only reason to breed is to preserve or improve the breed...not just to have puppies.

We lost our shiba inu, Mowgli, last week. We've made reports at the shelters and put up fliers, but to no avail. I'm besides myself, and our cat is terribly lonely. Please, if you've found him or know anyone who has...let us know. I've heard reports of dogs in our area being stolen to use as bait...and this makes me extremely sad. Mowgli is extremely energetic, but happy and loving. He's black and tan with a silver chain collar, tagged and chipped, with a bit of seasonal dryness son his backside. Thanks for you help. I don't understand why a rescue group would not adopt a puppy to you if you're willing to come home at lunchtime and/or have someone take the puppy out while you're at work ... depending on the age of the puppy. Are you talking about an 8-week-old puppy or a 16-week-old puppy? They have very different needs, and if it's a very young puppy, perhaps the rescue didn't feel that one break per day was enough for a dog that age.

However, in answer to the subsequent poster, it is not "discrimination" to choose the BEST family for a puppy ... and if you're adopting a very young puppy (8 to 12 weeks old), then yes, you had BETTER plan on either being home every 2-3 hours during the day, or having a dog-sitter come in that often to care for the puppy. You also should plan on getting up in the middle of the night for two or three potty breaks, because if you want a properly housebroken dog, that's what you have to do.

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience with a rescue, but I can assure you that not all of them are the same ... so please check out a few more and see if they can help you in your search for a puppy. But please don't do what the other poster suggested and resort to buying one (unless you do a lot of research and go to a responsible breeder). Because if your'e worried about health and behavioral issues, the WORST thing you can do is buy from a pet store (which sells nothing but puppy mill puppies) or a backyard breeder (who's selling god-only-know what).

Its a shame that they do it. Dogs need stay-at-home moms (aka HOUSEWIVES, if you take away the politically correct nonsense) to raise them now? Probably half the reason the dog was dumped in the first place is because someone poor couldn't take care of it. And yet one-income families can adopt pets?

Rescue groups shoot themselves in the foot by over-screening adoption candidates sometimes. Its a thousand times easier to just go out and buy a dog then rescue one*. Eventually even the patient people start getting annoyed at the process.

*EDIT: I didn't mean to imply that you SHOULD go buy a dog, but only that it was a much simpler process that some people resort to after being put through the ringer by rescue groups. Most if not all pet store dogs are overpriced, under-qualified, mill-bred animals, and these operations should not be supported. Buying from respectable breeders is a perfectly acceptable solution, but do try and navigate the adoption scene first if you can.

It's obvious my husband and I will not be able to adopt a puppy from the rescue groups in this area based on the assumption that I am lying about my willingness to go home on my lunch breaks and use a pet sitter in the early stages. I did not see a disclaimer on your website that working families are not eligible for puppies, but it would have been nice to know. It is very frustrating that we have waited for YEARS until we got out of an apartment, bought a home and a yard and were making enough money that we can provide for a dog. It is not something we are jumping into without much thought and discussion, and we can't even get a rescue organization to check our vet reference or meet us before we are discarded as naive.
I understand that adult dogs are less work and some may make great pets, but forgive me that I do not want to take the chance that an adult dog will have behavior issues stemming from a prior home or shelter. Our wish is to find a puppy that needs a good home, raise & train him/her together, knowing that that requires TONS of attention and behavior classes and enjoying the results of our hard work for many many years. But thanks for NOT even considering us!

Our doberman just past away due to cancer and I think that we are now ready to adopt again. It's been one year since she's past. We were looking to adopt another Dobie, but we also like Akitas, mastiffs and bulldogs.

I have owned an akita before and found them to be WONDERFUL learners and very loyal to their owners. I've always loved mastiffs and bulldogs as well. As you can tell we prefer bigger dogs. :)

"Chaos" is a 4 month old lab mix. He is great with kids (we have 5 and 6 yr old) and cats we also have 2. He loves to play frisbee and with his toys and tennis balls. Our landlord won't let us keep him. He is super friendly and is housebroken and up on his shots. We also have his crate which he sleeps in at night. Also have leash, collar, food, toys, treats, bowls and Lead that screws into the ground for him to be put outside. Hate to give him up, but have too. We are asking $100 adoption fee to assure he goes to a good home and for expenses for supplies, etc. Needs to be gone by this weekend and don't want him to be sent to the pound.

A Letter from a Shelter Manager

I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know.

That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 30% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs with AKC papers (not that they're any measure of quality in a dog).

The most common excuses I hear are; "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving to that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog".

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full (which hasn't been the case in the past 3 years, thanks to the economy) and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 to 100 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.

Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well-behaved' they are.

If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT.

**ADDED NOTE: You say you turned your dog over to a "no-kill" shelter? There is no across-the-board definition of "no-kill." Ask for the shelter's euthanasia policy before surrendering your dog. Or better yet, do EVERYTHING possible to KEEP the pet you made lifelong commitment to, and use the shelter as a last resort.

On Sunday, May 24, 2009, my Pugs, Chief and Ditto somehow got out of our backyard located at 3814 Fernglade Dr., Houston, Harris County, Texas in the Oak Creek Village Subdivision right off of FM1960 and Falling Creek.

They have been gone for two weeks as of today, Monday, June 8th.

We have put up over 500 flyers in the Subdivision as well as signs in some of the neighboring subdivisions.

We have searched extensively and have been unsuccessful. Both dogs were last seen on the corner of Parkville and Falling Creek.

We have visited BARC as well as the SPCA and the Harris County Animal Control as well, as contacting all Vets in a 15 mile radius.

Our family truly misses our Pugs. Pamela is not coping to the loss well at all. Pamela stays home due to disabilities and the Pugs are her companions. In addition, Pamela recently lost her mother and a brother a year ago March, thus another loss is hard for her to bear.

Tory is still alive today, and I will post her until she is no longer available, because I think she�s is a sweet and wonderful girl who is SO worthy of a second chance.

I am hoping that if one of you out there is even considering bringing a dog into your life, that you would please take a moment and consider sweet Tory. Tory desperately needs someone to save her from horrible death in the gas chamber. The Bladen county animal shelter in Elizabethtown is full, and she is living on borrowed time, but that is about to run out. Tory, of all dogs, isn't deserving of that fate!

Because I have met Tory at the shelter, I can attest to her sweet and lovely temperament. She is such a beautiful and loving little girl. I am confident she would be the perfect addition to any home! Tory is between 40 and 45 lbs, and the size of a small Labrador. This sweet girl is very friendly, and will seek out your attention.

She sat and wagged her tail at me and wiggled her butt for a good 15 minutes while I waited for the shelter to open. And when I got inside, she was waiting at the gate to her kennel for some lovin' and reassurance.

She was EXTREMELY grateful for any tiny bit of attention she got, and when she was touched an petted, it really seemed to comfort her. She is very scared in the shelter. Whoever her owner was really had to be a totally heartless person to abandon such a beautiful and personable dog to die in the gas chamber.

Tory is stunning - she has these cool and unusual ears that stand up when she's interested in her surroundings, or when she sees anyone who she thinks might stop to give her some lovin�. Her eyes are soft and loving, and she wanted nothing more than to be close to someone.

This girl immediately caught my attention, and she has not left my mind since I left the shelter, because she is a GOOD girl who truly does deserve a good home with people who will love her. If only I had a place for her to go, I wouldn�t have hesitated to pull her myself. But with three of my own dogs and one foster in my small home, two of them with medical issues, I am not able to take her. But I cannot stress enough what an awesome girl Tory is.

Please don�t write her off. Give her a chance. Tory was honestly one of the most well-behaved and sweet dogs in the shelter. She�s been there too long and her time is up, and she doesn't deserve to die in a gas chamber. I just know she'd be forever grateful to whoever could come and save her from that horrible fate.

Please contact Silvia if you can save her life. I promise you, she is so worth it!

On Sunday, May 24, 2009, my Pugs, Chief and Ditto somehow got out of our backyard located at 3814 Fernglade Dr., Houston, Harris County, Texas in the Oak Creek Village Subdivision right off of FM1960 and Falling Creek.

They have been gone for two weeks as of today, Monday, June 8th.

We have put up over 500 flyers in the Subdivision as well as signs in some of the neighboring subdivisions.

We have searched extensively and have been unsuccessful. Both dogs were last seen on the corner of Parkville and Falling Creek.

We have visited BARC as well as the SPCA and the Harris County Animal Control as well, as contacting all Vets in a 15 mile radius.

Our family truly misses our Pugs. Pamela is not coping to the loss well at all. Pamela stays home due to disabilities and the Pugs are her companions. In addition, Pamela recently lost her mother and a brother a year ago March, thus another loss is hard for her to bear.

When we met Skyler, this poor little gray kitten was practically hidden in the lonely top row of cages, five feet off the floor. He really deserves a closer look, so we are happy to present these few pictures and a video for your approval. Skyler is a male silver tabby, two months old, who was brought to us after he somehow became separated from his littermates. With her wide bars and well-placed white highlights and incredibly wide whiskers, Catalina is an exceptionally pretty tabby cat. It's a shame there was so much noise and confusion when we took her out to do a video, but Catalina held up fine to the frightful din and we still managed to get one or two good shots. We have very little background on her, except to say that she is a young adult who was found in Upland one month ago. She obviously belonged to someone and she has excellent social skills with people. If you take a few minutes to get acquainted, you will certainly agree that she deserves to live in a nice home like yours!

This is ABSOLUTELY INCORRECT. You should NOT take your dog into an off-leash park on leash. That it why most good parks have two gates - so the leash can be taken off before entering the park. Leaving the dog on lead makes the dogs feel trapped and insecure. They dog needs to be able to move about and greet others as they feel comfortable.

I have been going to the park for years and have also studied dog behavior and training and this is the absolute WRONG way to do it! Anytime I have seen this done, the dog unleash gets reactive and unsure because it feels ganged up on.

To say that pit bull/pit bull mixes should not be taken to a dog park is total discrimination against the breed. I have 3 dogs one of which is a pit mix, and she is the most docile, sweet girl who wouldn't hurt a fly. She was actually attacked by a german shep and this has caused her to become so fearful of other dogs that when we are out she sticks to my side like glue. She is even fearful of hyper small dogs, although not fearful in an aggressive way. She just goes out of her way to avoid getting too close to any strange dog. Yet she will play with my 20 lb Havanese with such gentleness. The little dog can do anything she wants and the pit just tolerates her, when she has had enough, she gives a little warning growl to let the baby know it is time to back off. Any dog can become aggressive and it is up to the owner to watch their dog very carefully, and most important watch for any signs that might indicate a change in the dogs energy. Dogs that are taken to the dog park and allowed to play off leash should be dogs that have been well socialized since birth. Letting an unsure dog off leash is not the way to socialize it. It needs to be gradual. Any time you take your dog to an off leash park, you should enter with the dog on leash and introduce it to the other dogs before letting it roam free. Most important, NEVER take your eyes off your dog. You should be supervising it's every move and always be close by in case trouble starts brewing. I see too many people just let their dog go while they carry on conversations with other people, talk on their cell phones, or read a book only glancing at their dog every so often.

Luciano is 4-6 years old. He's scared at the shelter, but warms up after a few minutes. He seems fine with other dogs and cats but should go to a home without small children. Luciano is a Chihuahua/Corgi/Shiba Inu mixed surrendered to animal control because his family didn't want him anymore. He enjoys being sung to and going for walks. Please come meet him today!
