I often hear the difference between a good player and a great player is early preparation!! Is this true? How does one learn to prepare early? How early should you start to take the racquet back?

I have heard this same exact message thousands of times.

I was always taught to take my racquet back early blah blah blah.

The constant advice was to have the racquet back and waiting before the ball bounced on my side of the net.

This, of course, is rather subjective.

However... when you watch the best players, and those with the "best" technique, it is apparent that they take the racquet back LATE.

Generally for a groundstroke, the racquet is in front of a player's body as the ball is bouncing.

That, it seems, still leaves plenty of time for a "unit turn" while you loop the racquet in one continuous motion on the backswing and then to really accelerate on the forward path.

The problem that players find with early preparation is the waiting. By getting the racquet back early so that you are poised and waiting to hit the ball, it eliminates the momentum you created.

There needs to be a balance, and that comes with experience.

Obviously when a ball is coming fast, there is a greater premium on quick preparation (and probably an abbreviated backswing as well).

Many coaches and teaching professionals observe errors committed against fast, hard balls and therefore urge students to "prepare early."

The early preparation helps in some cases, but may hurt the player when readying for a slow- or medium-paced shot.

To find the optimum speed(s) of racquet preparation, I would urge you to experiment.

Try to take the racquet back at the last possible moment.

If that is not successful, then go earlier until you find the best formula for yourself.

What I teach is a street proven, no nonsense system of self-defense that is remarkably easy to learn and incredibly effective. Within a few short lessons, an average adult (with no prior experience) can learn to disable most attackers in 3 to 5 seconds or less� even if an attacker is significantly larger or stronger. Adapted from a form of hand-to-hand combat still taught to US Special Forces, this system has been tested in countless real life-and-death situations and has been proven brutally effective.

EASY TO LEARN

Unlike most traditional martial arts, which require months or years of practice before true proficiency is reached, the system I teach is specifically designed to allow novices to develop lethal, real-world skills very QUICKLY and very EASILY. Students need not be �in shape� or have any fighting experience to learn what I teach. If you have an honest desire to acquire the set of skills necessary to defend yourself against attack � and can dedicate a couple of hours a week to lessons � you can learn this system.

LESSONS TAILORED TO YOUR NEEDS

The self-defense system I teach has been adapted, over time, to suit a variety of applications. These applications range from RAPE RESISTANCE to POLICE AND SECURITY PERSONNEL TRAINING, and about a dozen other applications in between. As such, lessons can be specifically tailored to fit a student�s individual needs, limitations, and available time. Each lesson is generally scheduled to last at least one hour, but the duration can be adjusted as needed.

AFFORDABLE

I teach self-defense because doing so is my PASSION. I do not seek to earn a living by teaching, and do not depend on the income earned from teaching. I teach because I enjoy helping people gain the ability and confidence required to defend themselves from violent attackers. As such I charge on a sliding scale, taking into account both a student's financial situation and needs. I also appreciate those who appreciate what I have to offer, and do not hesitate to give additional instruction (when needed) to serious students for no additional charge. What I want is to pass on what I've learned over the last 25 years to people who will value it and benefit from it. In terms of my motivation for teaching self-defense, money is very secondary. On average, I charge $25 per one-hour lesson - much less than almost any other instructor (with comparable experience and expertise) charges for private lessons. If the $25 fee is legitimately too steep for a student - but that student has a genuine desire or need to learn the skills I teach - I am more than willing to work out a more affordable arrangement.
