Mechanical Engineer (Bristol, PA)

Humanistic Robotics, Inc. (HRI) is a small tech company developing innovative solutions to problems of social consequence. HRI is currently focused on the global landmine problem, and is working with the US Department of Defense to redevelop popular mine clearance tools, as well as invent a new robotic paradigm to radically increase the speed of demining worldwide.

HRI is looking for a dedicated, motivated, self-starter who can walk and chew gum at the same time and is able to adapt to the eccentricities of working within a small, innovative organization where all hands are on deck to move the effort forward. HRI is seeking a mechanical engineer to assist with program management, concept generation, detailed design, drawing creation, parts procurement, and product assembly for a suite of mine clearance tools that HRI is developing.

The Position Itself: In considering what this position would involve, it would be helpful to understand more about what HRI is developing. In the near term, HRI has developed and is refining a mine roller, which is a complex steel assembly used as an attachment for vehicles that need to operate in minefields. The roller is intended to trigger mines, but survive all antipersonnel mine blasts. Accordingly, both precision of design and robustness of construction are key to its success, and this product is currently in transition from R&D to field proof of concept in mined countries. The mechanical engineer will work with management to prioritize goals and timelines, organize project plans, work with other engineers to complete engineering and fabrication tasks, and ensure thorough documentation of the process. HRI is a small company in the process of transitioning technology from the lab to the field, and this position will involve a more-than-typical mix of engineering and fabrication tasks. HRI is an organization with no departments and few boundaries between positions, and this mix of roles should be appealing for the right candidate.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate would have education and experience in mechanical design and fabrication. They should be comfortable working with teams of managers, consultants, vendors, fabricators, and fellow engineers in a very fluid and entrepreneurial way. They should also be comfortable with a continually-evolving role in a small organization with few boundaries, meaning their own ingenuity, proactive attitude, and forward-leaning personality will be important in inventing and refining their own job and the relevant processes of the organization in general. A solid background in project management and CAD software is required, specifically Solidworks and Pro-E. Any existing level of security clearance a plus but not required.
