The secret of many pro and amature athletes to gain the the competitive edge, quicker recovery and to prevent injuries is yoga. The purpose of yoga is to unlock ones full mind and body potential. Many of the athletes I've trained/worked with have had tight hips, hamstrings, back and shoulder problems; all areas key to athletic performance and potential injury in virtually every sport . Yoga can prevent and heal all of these issues.
My name is Allen Barkus and I am one of the few teachers in Philadelphia teaching traditional Ashtanga yoga exclusively to private students. Ashtanga yoga is the best full-body physical workout you will ever experience along with wonderful meditative benefits. I teach in the traditional Mysore style with hands on assists, great for both beginners and for those who already have an established practice since you only progress into the practice as you are able. We will also focus on proper breathing and alignment, both often not taught properly in classes.
I've completed extensive teacher trainings with David Swenson and Manju Jois. Manju's father, K. Pattabhi Jois whom recently passed at almost 94 years old, originated the Ashtanga practice. The Swenson training focused mainly on the physical practice and my on-going advanced training over the past 5 years with Manju Jois focuses on the traditional practice and yoga healing therapy. I teach at both homes and offices. My experience includes working with/training athletes at the University of Pennsylvania, teaching other yoga teachers, working with a serious marathon runner, a baseball player, people recovering from surgeries, and corporate groups.
In 8 months one of my students, whom had no prior yoga experience, lost 70 pounds. Of course he worked hard to achieve that result along with full-body strengthening, toning and increased physical endurance. Another student was thrilled that she dropped a full dress size practicing with me 2 times a week over 2 months. Other students tell me how their back problems, breathing and posture have improved. Of course you will also gain balance in your life and a quiet mind from the meditative part of the practice.
Special Craigslist Rate: 1 1/2 hour sessions are $80 for one person, only $55 each for two, and $50 each for three or more students. My regular rates are currently $90 for one person, $65 each for two students, and $55 each for three or more students. My group rate is $250, only $25 each if you get 10 people at your location.
